Building History
Architect Theodore T. Boutmy designed this structure on piles in San Francisco Bay for a shared facility for the Sausalito Yacht Club and Sausalito Cruising Club in the late 1950s. Berkeley architect George W. Kosmak, Jr., (1905-1983) served as a consultant and John E. Brown was a consulting engineer.
Building Notes
This project for the Sausalito Yacht Club and Sausalito Cruising Club won an award citation from Progressive Architecture magazine in 01/1958. (See "P/A Fifth Annual Design Awards Program Recreation: Award Citation," Progressive Architecture, vol. 39, no. 1, 01/1958, p. 104.) In the award statement, a writer for Progressive Architecture wrote: Two clubs--owners of power boats and sailboats--will share the new building. Of design importance were these points: 1.) flexibility--to accommodate both occupants; 2.) economy and simplicity of structural systems--most work to be performed by the club members; 3.) attractive appearance of roof--town lies on hillside above. The main hall is to be used for large dinners and dances. Either lounge may be partitioned off. The rectangular building platform is to be roofed by seven barrel vaults of laminated plywood." (See "P/A Fifth Annual Design Awards Program Recreation: Award Citation," Progressive Architecture, vol. 39, no. 1, 01/1958, p. 104.)
