Overview

This Mission Revival style residence was designed for recent immigrants from ON, Canada, Matthew Henry McIndoo and Sarah Frances Ross, who came to Fresno to be closer to two brothers who had relocated here years earlier.

Building History

This residence was built c. 1904 for the rancher Matthew Henry McIndoo (born 01/02/1860 in Cavan, ON-d. 05/29/1951 in Fresno, CA) and his wife Sarah Frances Ross () who came to Fresno, CA, from Canada in 1903. They migrated from Canada after the death of their only child, Matthew Carter Ross McIndoo in 07/1901. Matthew Henry McIndoo descended from Irish immigrant parents, who settled in the Province of ON and had ten children. Two of Matthew's brothers--William and James--settled in Fresno in 1886 and 1895, respectively, and the former became quite wealthy as a result of land speculation. Matthew Henry McIndoo resided in this house until death at age 91.

Margo Nagyar and John Snyder in their Historic American Building Survey review of the McIndoo House speculated that it had been designed by Benjamin MacDougall of the MacDougall Brothers architectural firm.
