Building History
Brown's Mercantile Hotel operated in San Francisco, CA, in 1854. (See Brown's Mercantile Hotel advertisement, LeCount and Strong's San Francisco Directory for the Year 1854, opposite title page,) It likely used the word "Mercantile" in its title to attract "wholesome" business travelers and to differentiate it from less savory hotels where gambling and prostitution occurred in early San Francisco. .
