Building History
The California State Agricultural Society was founded on 05/13/1854. The State of California opened the first Agricultural Pavilion in 1859. This first structure was replaced by a second, larger pavilion in 1884.
In 1900, the Agricultural Pavilion occupied a site on 15th Street between M (now Capitol Avenue) and N Streets. It occupied land where the CA State Capitol Park now stands. (See Sacramento, California, City Directory, 1900, p. 28.)
The State of California, Capitol Museum said of the Agricultural Pavilion: "In 1884, the state constructed the Agricultural Pavilion at 15th and N Street. The pavilion provided space for social events, hosted the State Fair until 1905, and housed 1906 San Francisco earthquake victims." (See State of California Capitol Museum.gov, "Capitol Park," accessed 01/19/2024.) It was replaced by a new fairgrounds complex in 1905, located on Stockton Boulevard. (See Sacramento History Online.org, "State Agricultural Pavilion," accessed 01/19/2024.)
Demolition
The CA State Agricultural Pavilion was razed in 1908. According to the State of California, Capitol Museum: "In 1908, the state replaced the pavilion with native plants from around California, including Coastal Redwoods, Giant Sequoias, oaks, pines, and a cactus garden." (See State of California Capitol Museum.gov, "Capitol Park," accessed 01/19/2024.)
