Building History
John Breuner (1828-1890) established the pioneering John Breuner and Company home furnishings store in Sacramento, CA, in 1856.
In 1865, John Breuner operated at 170 K Street, between 6th and 7th Streets. In 1893, the John Breuner Store sold furniture, bedding and carpets at 604 K Street. (See Sacramento, California, City Directory, 1893, p. 135.)
The Breuner Home Furnishings store operated at the same location (but different address) 600-608 K Street in 1910. At this time, both Frederick W. Breuner, department manager of the store, and Louis F. Breuner, President and Manager, lived in Sacramento. Frederick lived at 1305 Q Street, while Louis resided at 1103 O Street. Entrance to offices leased upstairs in the Breuner Building was located at 610 K Street. (See Sacramento, California, City Directory, 1910, p. 77.)
Building Notes
In 1899, F.H. Schardin operated an architectural practice in Room #19 of the Breuner Block. (See Sacramento, California, City Directory, 1899, p. 612.)
Demolition
The 19th-century Breuner's retail outlet was razed in late 1971 and early 1972. A groundbreaking ceremony for a new Breuner's Sacramento store appeared in "Breuners To Move after 116 Years,"Sacramento Observer on 01/20/1972, p. 7. This new store was designed by the Phoenix, AZ, architectural partnership of Haver, Nunn and Nelson, assisted by the Sacramento architectural firm of Cox, Liske, Lionakis and Beaumont.
