Building History

For a short time, the Saint Elmo was one of Los Angeles's most chic hotels. Co-owners in 1886 were Edward L. Dunham and C.L. Schieffelin. The hotel had an address of 249 North Main Street in 1887. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1887, p. 474.)In 1889, the proprietors were Rose and Bilderrain, and the owner Mrs. Doria Jones. She sued them for $3,592.05 in 1889 for back rent and other expenses.

The hotel continued in operation at 343 North Main Street in 1897. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1897, p. 1129.)

Alteration

In 1887, a Mrs. Doria Jones owned the Saint Elmo Hotel, commissioned an unnamed architect to make a large addition to the building and to renovating the interior completely.
