Overview

The temple-like design of the Placer County Bank enhanced the institution's appearance of stability and sophistication, serving to attract financial customers.

Building History

Charles Kaiser Sumner (1874-1948), an architect then living in Berkeley, CA, completed plans for the two-story Placer County Bank. Sumner moved to Palo Alto, CA, in 1917, and spent his remaining years in that city.

Building Notes

This templar bank building had two-floor Doric columns placed in antis in the facade's portico. Doors on either end of the front facade enabled access to tenant spaces other than the bank. The bank had a sober and dignified, Neo-classical appearance, reflective of Sumner's Beaux-Arts architectural precepts gained at Columbia University between c. 1898 and 1901.
