Building History
An advertisement in the San Jose, California, City Directory, 1890, indicated that, "This house has been enlarged to more than double its former capacity, and is elegantly refurnished throughout. Electric bells and all modern improvements in every room. Special attention paid to commercial men." (See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1890, plate opposite p. 366.) Its scale and its exterior appearance were sustantially altered during this enlargement. Tyler Beach was its proprietor in 1890. (See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1890, p. 366.)
The Saint James Hotel #2 may have expanded to take up all or part of the first floor space.
