Overview

This was likely the first US Post Office operating in San Francisco, CA, by 1850. It stood on the corner of Dupont Street and Clay Street during the earliest years of the Gold Rush.

Building History

The US Post Office #1 was set up at the intersection of Clay Street and Dupont Street, the latter one San Francisco's earliest streets, known before American acquisition of CA in 1848 as the "Calle de la fundacion." Subsequently, Dupont Street was renamed "Grant Street" (for the Civil War General and President Ulysses S. Grant) in 1906.

In 1850, Jacob B. Moore was the local postmaster. The building had hours from 8 am to 6 pm. (See The San Francisco City Directory by Charles P. Kimball, September 1, 1850, pp. 124-125.)
