Overview
The affordable Boylston Apartments, containing 56 "microstudio" apartments was begun in 2019 and completed a year later by the Low Income Housing Institute.
Building History
The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) erected this wood-frame, apartment building on the site of a large, single-family residence formerly at 420 Boylston Avenue East. As per the LIHI.org website: "The 56 unit Boylston Apartments on Capitol Hill are one of three apartment buildings that LIHI secured with Rapid Acquisition funds from the City of Seattle and the State Dept. of Commerce. The Boylston Apartments feature a rooftop deck, lobby library, and computer room." (See Low Income Housing Institute.org, "Boylston Apartments," accessed 08/29/2023.) The units were called "microstudios" for their tiny sizes. The average apartment here contained 258 square feet.
As per another page on its website: "Founded in 1991, LIHI has grown to be one of the most productive affordable housing developers in the Northwest. LIHI owns and/or manages over 3,400 housing units at 75 sites in six counties throughout the Puget Sound region." (See Low Income Housing Institute.org, "About LIHI," accessed 08/29/2023.) In 2023, LIHI had offices at 1253 South Jackson Street, Suite #A, Seattle, WA 98144.
This multifamily housing unit replaced a sizeable, single-family residence at 420 Boylston that had stood since before 1905.
