Overview

At the time this house was built, this two-floor, wood-frame residence in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood had splendid views of Elliott Bay.

Building History

The Fehren-Marvin Company of Seattle, WA, designed this residence for Mrs. J.F.T. Mitchell c. 1900. The Seattle Daily Times noted of it in 1901: "The residence of Mrs. J.F. T. Mitchell, 414 Boylston avenue north, is of a Dutch colonial design, and cost $5,000. This house has ten rooms, nearly all of which have an exceptional view of the Sound." (See "Real Estate and Building News: New Houses Illustrated," Seattle Daily Times, 10/16/1901, p. 21.)

It appears that Fehren-Marvin likely designed the houses at 414 and 420 Boylston Avenue in about 1901. Their footprints on the Sanborn Insurance Maps of Seattle, Washington, Volume Three 1905, Sheet #286, were identical, and a portion of 420 can be seen in a 1901 Seattle Daily Times article noted above. There appear to have been slight differences made in gable construction on the roof to add variety to the designs, but other than that, these were likely twins.
