Overview

This early San Francisco clothing store operated at a location bounded by Montgomery Street on the east, Merchant Street on the north, Kearny Street on the west and Clay Street on the south. This site later became part of the Chinatown neighborhood.

Building History

An advertisement in the San Francisco City Directory for the Year Commencing September, 1861, listed the Lockwood, Ewell and Company, as having stores at two locations: 626 Clay Street in San Francisco, CA, and 173 Broadway in New York, NY. The 626 Clay Street building, named "Oak Hall," also had an entrance at 631 Merchant Street. (See San Francisco City Directory for the Year Commencing September, 1861, p. xi.)

Demolition

The Lockwood, Ewell and Company store at 626 Clay Street was razed.
