The building was owned by William Shiels, a real estate dealer, who maintained his office at 608 Market Street in 1869. Shiels lived at 530 O'Farrell Street at the time. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1869, p. 561.)

Building Notes

In 1864, the architect Thomas J. Johnston maintained his office in the Shiels Building. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1864, p. 441.)
