Building History

This was an early work by William Van SIclen (1865-1951), who likely started his career working as an architect by 1890 or 1891. During his career, Van Siclen moved a great deal, starting in CA, then relocating to AK and then WA. He moved to Edmonton, AB, Canada, by 1912 and to Tulsa, OK, by 1917. He ended his career in Brownsville, TX, where he died in 1951.

The San Francisco Chronicle carried a notice of this group of flats designed by Van Siclen for William Furling: "Union near Buchanan, two-story frame flats: owner William Fruhling; architect W.D. Van Siclen, contractor, A.J. McIlwain; cost $11,200.” (See “Building Contracts,” San Francisco Chronicle, 06/12/1891, p. 5.)
