Building History
This church, completed in 1871, took the place of the Saint Francis de Sales Church #1, obtained by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oregon City in about 1862. This second church was erected on the northwest corner of Church and 1st Streets in Baker City, OR. In 1903, the Roman Catholic Church created the Diocese of Baker City, with its cathedral in the 1871 church. It functioned in this capacity for about three years before a third, larger and more grand Gothic Revival building was erected on the same site between 1906 and 1908.
