Overview
The Northern Pacific Railway Company operated its first passenger and freight depots in 1891 on Weller Street between South 2nd and South 3rd Avenues in 1890.
Building History
In 1889, the Northern Pacific Railway Company (NPRC) did not advertise a depot in R.L. Polk and Company's Seattle Directory, 1889, (p. 338). The only facilities mentioned were the Northern Pacific Express Company's office in Squire's Building and a ticket office, run by ticket agent Andrew Chilberg, on the southeast corner of Yesler Way and Commercial Street (renamed 1st Avenue South).
In 1890, however, the NPRC continued to maintain Chilberg's ticket agency at Yesler and Commercial, but also listed a "Depot and General Office, Weller s w cor S2d, Wm B Spencer, Agt." (See Polk's Seattle Directory Company's Seattle City Directory, 1890, p. 535.) The following year, it indicated that the passenger depot stood at Weller and South 2nd while a freight depot stood at Weller and South 3rd.
