Overview
This Stimson Company lumber yard, office and wharf was in operation by at least 1893, likely before. It stood on a bluff above the waterfront on the southwest corner of Banner Street and John Street. The coast line has changed drastically since 1893, as various infrastructure projects, including the Denny Regrade, sluiced soil into Elliott Bay, edging usable land west.
Building History
Three members of the Stimson Family arrived in Seattle in 1889 looking to buy timber lands and to establish lumber mills, lumber yards and wharfs to ship timber internationally. According to a Stimson Lumber website, the Stimson Brothers purchased timber lands in "...Snohomish County and Hood Canal in Washington, the Tillamook region in Oregon, and in California." (See Stimson Lumber.com, "History," accessed 02/23/2023.)
Building Notes
In 1893, this complex included a lumber office, located on the northeast corner of the property; a spacious lumber yard containing about 500,000 board feet of lumber; a dressed lumber shed; a gangway to the dock; and a wharf set on piles.
