Overview

This three-story, men's dormitory was built during World War I and accommodated the Oregon Agricultural College's new Specialized Army Training Program beginning in 1918.

Building History

This austere and utilitarian men's dormitory housed male students for about ten years, between 1918 and 1927. The Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) named it for the school's Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) Secretary between 1917 and 1920, Daniel V. Poling. (See Oregon State University Libraries.edu, "OSU Buildings Histories in the Special Collections and Archives Research Center Building History: Poling Hall," accessed 01/27/2023.)

The wood-frame building was erected rapidly, and did not have the usual architectural flourishes of academic buildings of the Beaux-Arts period. It was likely seen as temporary from the beginning, and was replaced rapidly by the more substantial Weatherford Hall.

Demolition

Poling Hall #1 was razed to make space for Weatherford Hall completed in 1928.
