Buildings Notes
Between 1892 and 1912, The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church at 9th Avenue and Stewart Street had one pastor, Martin L. Larson. Larson's first 20 years as a Lutheran pastor were spent here. on 07/02/1912, his congregation and friends celebrated his tenure. The Seattle Daily Times noted the occasion: “Twenty years of continuous service as pastor of the Swedish Lutheran Church, Ninth Avenue and Stewart Street, was completed by Rev. Martin L. Larson on Tuesday, July 2. As a mark of their appreciation of the work he has done during these years hundreds of his friends and members of his congregation gathered at the church on that evening to celebrate the anniversary. This is the only charge which Rev. Larson has had. He was ordained at Lindsburg, Kan., June 5, 1892. On June 28 of the same year he was married at Denver Colo., to Miss Clara Wahlberg. The young couple spent their honeymoon traveling to Seattle, the field of their future labors, arriving here July 2, 1892. Rev. Mr. Larson was elected president of the Columbia Conference on February 20, 1902, which office he occupied for five years. His congregation is the largest of any Swedish Lutheran Church west of Denver.” (See “Rev. Martin L. Larson Honored by His Flock,” Seattle Daily Times, 07/06/1912, p. 9.)
