The Arlington Club #2 stood on the northwest corner of West Park Avenue (later renamed SW 9th Avenue) and Alder Street. It also had the address 599 SW 9th Avenue.

Overview

This building, at SW Park Avenue and SW Alder Street, beginning in 1892, served as the second clubhouse for the elite men's club in Portland, OR, the Arlington Club.

Building History

In 1892, the Arlington Club relocated to this three-floor clubhouse from the former J.C. Ainsworth House that had served to accommodate organizational activities since 1881. Ainsworth (1822-1893) was a founder of the Oregon Steam Navigation Company (OSNC)and later would become a successful banker in OR and CA.

In 1908, K.A.J. Mackenzie served as president, W.H. Duckley was its secretary. It had the address 133 West Park Avenue in 1908. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Portland, Oregon Directory, 1908, p. 230)

In 1910, a new clubhouse on SW Salmon Street, designed by the noted Portland architectural firm of Whidden and Lewis, opened, replacing this facility.

Building Notes

The Arlington Club #2 was a L-shaped building with a stubby, square rear addition on its northwest corner forming the smaller portion of the L. It had the look of a Georgian Revival townhouse, with two corner bays projecting slightly on the front facade. A portion of the West Park Avenue facade jutted forward on the first and second floors, with the main entrance located in the middle. Above the entrance, on the second floor, a wood-frame section with a flat roof sheltered two large, bowfront windows placed bilaterally on either side of center. The designer placed an entrance hallway centrally at the west end of which was a grand stairway. This brick building recalled Boston townhouses of the early 19th century. The next Arlington Clubhouse #3, purified this Georgian Colonial townhouse imagery.
