Building History

This first Downtown Seattle location of the J.C. Penney Company, Incorporated, operated on the northwest corner of 2nd Avenue and Union Street until c. 1933. In 1932, a line of three department stores operated on the west side of 2nd Avenue between Pike and University Streets. The J.C. Penney Deparment Store #1 stood at 1405 2nd Avenue, the Rhodes Department Store at 1323-1335 2nd and the Fraser-Paterson Department Store #1 at 1421-1433 2nd.

Building Notes

As noted in an advertisement of 1931, the men's suits department occupied space on the second floor. Other menswear items had a first-floor location. (See "It Pays to Shop at Penneys!" [advertisement], Seattle Daily Times, 11/12/1931 p. 11.)
