Thies enlisted in the military on 02/10/1945 at the tail end of World War II and attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1948. In 1950, Thies lived at 3058 Shasta Circle in Los Angeles address with his father Rudolf Frederick Thies (1894-1964).
