The Farmers; National Gold Bank stood on the southwest corner of Santa Clara Street and 1 Street in 1877.

Building History

The bank began operations in 1874. It was one of ten gold banks chartered by the US Government in 1870, and printed and distributed about $4,679,740 in paper currency between 1874 and 1935. By-laws of the Farmers' National Gold Bankwere published in 1876. It held $500,000 of gold capital in 1876. (See The Banker's Almanac and Register for 1876, Second Edition, B. It became the 1st National Bank of San Jose in 1880.

The Farmers' National Gold Bank stood on the southwest corner of Santa Clara Street and First Street in Downtown San Jose, CA, in 1877. John W. Hinds was the president, D. Tisdale its cashier. (See Business directory of San Francisco and principal towns of California and Nevada, 1877, p. 91.)
