Overview

The Berkeley Gazette newspaper maintained its headquarters in the Gazette Building at 2044 Center Street in Berkeley, CA, in 1909. (See Polk-Husted Company's Oakland City Directory, 1909, p. 959.)

Building History

In 1909, Friend William Richardson (born 12/01/1865 in Ann Arbor, MI-d. 09/06/1943 in Berkeley, CA) was the Editor of the Berkeley Gazette. (See Polk-Husted Company's Oakland City Directory, 1909, p. 959.) Richardson added the name "Friend" as his legal first name to honor his Quaker beliefs. He worked in newspapers as an Publisher of the San Bernardino Times-Index between 1896 and 1901 and the Berkeley Gazette from 1901 until 1915. He would later hold several political offices in the State of CA, as Superintendent of the State Printing Office between 1912 and 1915, CA State Treasurer between 1915 and 1923 and as Governor between 1923 and 1927. Following his gubernatorial service, he worked as a member of the CA State Building and Loan Commission (1932-1933) and was the State Superintendent of Banks (1934-1939).
