Building History

The President of the University of California Berkeley (UCB) lived at this address in 1900, shortly after arriving in the city from Cornell University. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1900, p. 638.) He lived at this address until about 1902, when he moved to a two-story residence at 1820 Scenic Avenue, where he and his family remained until 1919. They then lived in three houses in succession on Ridge Road in Berkeley between 1922 and 1926. It appears that both of Wheeler's Houses at 1820 Scenic Avenue and 2425 Ridge Road were spared from the Berkeley Fire of 09/17/1923.
