Building History

The clockworks of this tower dated from 1901 and equipped a steeple destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. In 1983, the clockworks was re-inserted into this Modern tower that stood near the School of Education Building and across from the northwest corner of the Stanford Quad.

In 1990, the authors Peter H. Semallie and Peter H. Smith said of the 1983 clocktower: "The clocktower at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, houses the original 1901 university clock. Its original home, in a church steeple, was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake. This 1983 structure uses materials and scale to blend in with the historic Stanford campus." (See Peter H. Semallie and Peter H. Smith, New Construction for Older Buildings, [New York: Wiley-Interscience Publication, 1990], p. 137.)
