Overview

Los Angeles blacksmith Louis Roeder worked in this one-story adobe shop, where he also sold carriages and wagons, c. 1878.

Building History

Louis Roeder (born 01/28/1832 in Darmstadt, Germany-d. 02/20/1918 in Los Angeles, CA) immigrated to the US from Germany in 1851, according to the US Census of 1900. He and his wife had nine children together, of whom six were alive in 1900. They lived at 319 Boyd Street in Los Angeles.

Roeder later erected an office building on land that he owned at 23 South Spring, possibly the same parcel on which his blacksmith shop had stood ten years previously. In 1878, this shop also sold carriages and wagons to the public.

Demolition

This adobe structure was razed. In 2021, the Los Angeles Times Building occupied the site.
