Overview
Mrs. M.H. Yates owned the Virginia Building in 1862, that operated on the northwest corner of Stockton Street and Pacific Avenue, ijust north of the city's Chinatown district. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1862, p. 389.) San Francisco's Chinatown began to develop by the 1850s, but by the mid-1880s, did not contain this intersection. Its boundaries were roughly Stockton (on the west), Kearny (east), California (south), and Broadway (north). Chinatown would later absorb the Stockton and Pacific location.
