Building History
The Calvary Baptist Church congregation first met in the residence of Leon Whited at 1511 San Andres Street on 01/06/1935. Seventeen adults and ten children were present at this first assembly. A few weeks later, on 02/13/1935, the group named itself "Calvary Baptist Church," and by 08/1935, they had bought six lots at the corner of Chino and West Islay Streets. According to the church's history web page: "Dr. Benjamin Goodfield was called on September 26, 1935 to minister to the newly organized Calvary Baptist Church. The church members themselves did most of the construction of the sanctuary, which was completed and dedicated on December 1, 1935. At the close of World War II, many young veterans used their government-financed education (G.I. bill) to come to Santa Barbara and attend Westmont College. Their young families were an important addition to our congregation and many of the veterans became pastors and missionaries. A good number of Westmont professors and their families were regular attenders and filled many positions, shared their musical talents, and taught classes."
