Overview

This office building began operation in 1890 as the Chamber of Commerce Building in Spokane, WA, and was renamed the "Fernwell Building" in 1893.

Building History

Herman Preusse (1847-1926), one of Spokane's leading architects before the 1889 fire that destroyed so much of the city central business district, was also one of its most active designers after the blaze.

Building Notes

After 1915, the Mohawk Building (515 West Riverside) stood next door to the Fernwell Building (505-509 West RIverside) on West Riverside Avenue. The Rookery Building #2 (1934) stood on the southeast corner of North Howard Street and West Riverside Avenue. The Merton Building (aka the "Hazel-Merton Building") stood at 2 North Howard Street, but was demolished in 2004. The Rookery #2 and Mohawk Buildings were razed c. 2007, leaving only the Fernwell Building left standing on the block.
