The facility opened in 1923 with 70 beds, supervised by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word; the greatly enlarged medical center, 539-bed was run, since 1996, by Catholic Healthcare West, a non-profit organization;
Additions were planned for the hospital in 1928 by Ilton E. Loveless; he also designed Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA;
