This four-floor commercial building accommodated Blake and Company Hatters in 1862. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1862, p. xxx.) Prior to 1862, approximately, the building was numbered 136 Montgomery Street, and became 524 Montgomery.

Building History

Blake and Company Hatters occupied this location until at least 1865. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1865, p. lxxxi.)

Building Notes

By 1865, Blake and Company advertised that it sold not just hats but swords, belts, sashes, epaulettes, and flags. These items served members of various fraternal societies that often paraded through San Francisco in their regalia like a military unit. Shows of militarized patriotism in parades was common during the Civil War and for years thereafter.
