Overview

In 1865, the Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy operated at the corner of Bryant and 1st Streets in San Francisco, CA. It was one of seven hospitals operating in Civil War era San Francisco, the others being the San Francisco County Hospital and the US Marine Hospital. In addition, the benevolent socieities of various nationalities maintained health facilities for their recent immigrants, including those operated by the British, French, Germans, and the Italians. Building History

Sister Superior Mary B. Russell managed the hospital in 1865, and had one resident doctor on staff, J. Lee on staff and two visiting physicians, H.H. Toland, J.P. Whitney.
