Building Notes
In 1874, the Knox Building #2 leased space to 9 legal firms operating in San Jose, the most of any building in the city. The firms included those of J.C. Black (Room #18), George W. Blackford (Room #3), S.O. Houghton (Room #7), J.M. Kennedy (Room #11), James R. Lowe (Rooms #4 and 5), James A. Moultrie (Room #14), County Judge D.S. Payne (Room #6), J. Reynolds (Room #7), and C.D. Wright (Room #7).(See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1874, pp. 124-125.) Other important office buildings housing law firms included the Bank of San Jose Building #1 (5 firms), McLaughlin and Ryland's Building (4 firms), and the 312 1st Street Building (2 firms).
