The San Francisco architectural firm of Marquis and Stoller designed this hillside residence for a doctor, Herwin Schaefer, and his wife, in the foothills surrounding Napa, CA.

Building Notes

Herwin Schaefer (born 02/04/1916 in Bonn, Germany) and his wife, Hildegard Hinchman (born 12/14/1913 in Groton, MA-d. 10/14/2000). wed on 06/12/1940 in Milton, MA. He fled Nazi Germany coming to the US on 01/25/1937 aboard the S.S. Manhattan sailing between Hamburg, Germany, and New York, NY. He last resided in Bad Godesberg, Germany, nearby to Bonn, before emigrating. On 08/11/1941, he was a University of Chicago graduate student living at 1361 East 57th Street in Chicago, IL, when he applied for US citizenship.

When this residence was designed, Herwin Schaefer worked as a Professor of the History of Design at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB).
