Building History
This Wilson Building at 139 1/2 South Main Street first appeared in the Los Angeles, California, City Directory,in 1893. Two others, the Old Wilson Block occupied 126 West 1st Street, and the New Wilson Block, the southeast corner of 1st and Spring Streets. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1893,p. 817.)
Three "Wilson Blocks" were listed in Maxwell's Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1896, (p.1432): at 102 South Spring Street, 139 1/2 South Main, and 429 South Broadway. Four Wilson Blocks were listed in 1897: 102 South Spring Street, 139 1/2 South Main, 429 South Broadway and 113 East 1st Street. Maxwell's Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1897, (p. 992), listed the "Wilson Block (E)" at 429 S. Broadway and the "Wilson Block (L.B.)" at 113 East 1st.
In 1900, there were three buildings in Downtown Los Angeles that went by the name "Wilson Building." One was at 102 South Spring Street, one at 429 South Broadway, and this one at 139 1/2 South Main Street. (See the Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1900, p. 796.)
