Overview
Between 1894 and 1908, the J.A. Baillargeon and Company Store #1, purveyor of fancy and dry goods and furnishings, operated on the southeast corner of 2nd Avenue and James Street in the John Collins Building.
Building History
Just after the Fire of 1889, in 1890, when it was known as "The Lace House," Baillargeon's store occupied space in the Occidental Building (also known as the Collins Building), on the southwest corner of 2nd Avenue and James Street. The Lace House was also known as the "J.A. Baillargeon and Company" store by 1892. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1892, p. 167.) It moved across the street by 1894, and occupied space on the southeast corner of 2nd Avenue and James Street between 1894 and 1908 in the John Collins Block. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1894, p. 155.)
In 1908, J.A. Baillargeon and Company then relocated to a purpose-built, four-story store at 1100 2nd Avenue.
