Building History

Joseph A. Baillargeon (c. 1857-02/03/1936 in Seattle, WA), a French-Canadian merchant, worked in a business called "Latour and Company" first listed in the Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1887, (p. 212) in 1887. Dealing in fancy dry goods, he operated it with Isidor Latour and it was located in the Frye Opera House Building at Front Street (later 1st Avenue) and Marion Street.

Latour and Baillargeon dissolved their partnership by 1888. Latour and Company continued to operate at 900 Front Street in 1893. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1893, p. 1047.) Baillargeon's business became known alternately as "The Lace House" and "J.A. Baillargeon and Company Fancy and Dry Goods" by 1888 and was in operation at 711 Front Street. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1888, p. 21.)

Latour would later work as a clerk in the J.A. Baillargeon Store in 1900. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1900, p. 628.)
