Building History

John D. Hamrick (1875-1956), a prosperous theatre owner and lessee during the 1910s through the 1940s in Portland, OR, Tacoma, WA, and Seattle, WA, lived at 4-4 West Garfield Street in Capitol Hill in 1917 with his second wife, Sybal Irene Timberlake (born 1884 in Kansas City, MO-d. 09/11/1948 in Seattle, WA). At this time, he managed the Rex Theatre in Seattle. By 1921, he and his wife had moved to this residence on Queen Anne Hill, and managed the Blue Mouse Theatre in the city.

Unfortunately for the couple, their marriage ended in Seattle Divorce Court on 11/05/1921. (See "In Divorce Court," Seattle Times, 11/05/1921. p. 2.) By 1922 John had moved into quarters at the New Washington Hotel, while Sybal, who was very active in a charity, the North Queen Anne Guild of the Seattle Orthopedic Hospital during the 1920s, remained in the house with their daughter, Beatrice. John Hamrick would marry Fannie Marie Schuddings Hamrick (1893-1965) by about 1925.

Helen I. Marieskind owned the house until 06/26/1995, when it was sold to Derek P. and Kristi Laband. They jointly owned the residence until they divorced on 09/17/2001, after which time Derek retained ownership.

Building Notes

The Hamrick House occupied a 3,680-square-foot (0.08-acre) lot in 2019.
