The ceramic designer, Ernest Allen Batchelder, founder of the Batchelder Tile Works, owned this house at 626 Arroyo Drive in Pasadena, CA, c. 1909. He operated a kiln at the back of the property, which bothered neighbors because of the smoke generated by it. They eventually forced him to move his production facility to a site that is now occupied by the Arroyo Parkway. The noted architectural historian, Robert Winter (b. 1924), was a later owner. Winter was the Arthur G. Coons Professor of the History of Ideas, Emeritus, at Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA, and an authority on the Arts and Crafts Movement in Southern California.
