Overview

The wood-frame Hotel Elwood, designed in the Second Empire Style, operated in 1886. Mrs. M.E. Hunt managed the hotel in that year. (See Independent Publishing Company's New Directory of the City of Santa Barbara, Cal., 1886, p. iii.)

Building History

While the hotel's location remains mysterious, it was probably located in Goleta, nearby to the ranch of Ellwood Cooper (born 1829 in PA-d. 1918 in Santa Barbara, CA) who arrived here in 1870. Cooper began a variety of agricultural ventures, including the cultivation of ollive oil and Japanese persimmons, and the area around his ranch became known colloquially as "Ellwood" or "Elwood."
