Building History

Richmond Devol Durfee (born c. 1816 in RI-d. 04/22/1897 in Los Angeles, CA) and Caroline Larinda Crozier Durfee (born 07/1826 in IL-d. 1913 in Los Angeles, CA) married on 11/09/1844 in Randoph County, IL. They lived in Saint Louis, MO, in 1867, where Richmond had a business, Durfee, Hardcastle and Company, that dealt in wholesale dry goods. (See St Louis, Missouri, City Directory, 1867, p. 267.) By 1880, they resided in Jacksonville, IL. The Durfees moved to Los Angeles in their retirement and were in the city by 1890, at the latest. (Randolph registered to vote here on 08/12/1890. Richmond and Caroline had had six children together, of whom three were still alive in 1900. Two of these children, Cora (born c. 1857 in IL) and Guy (born c. 1859 in IL), still lived at 1007 West 24th Street with their mother in 1900. In addition, two boarders, Jennie L. Throop (born c. 1865 in CA) and her son, Waldo (born c. 01/1889 in CA) also lived at this address at the turn of the century.
