Building History

Joseph F. Bertrand owned this eponymous hotel, that operated in the small town of Tocaloma in Marin County, CA. An advertisment published in the Sausalito News said of it: "A new first-class hotel, containing 42 rooms, handsomely furnished and fitted up with all the latest improvements; gas, water, large dancing-hall, billiard-room, croquet ground, swings, etc.; delightful climate; fine trout-fishing; hunting, splendid drives to Bear Valley, etc.; terms, $8 to $12 per week; special rates to families." (See Betrand Hotel advertisement, Sausalito News, vol. 8, no. 14, 05/13/1892, p. 2.) Bertrand gave two contact addresses in San Francisco in the ad, one at 429 Bush Street, which was a hotel, and the other at 750 Mission Street.
