Building History

The Sea Ranch Chapel was erected in 1985 following the drawings of San Diego artist James Hubbell. A flyer for the Sea Ranch Association said of its purpose: "The Sea Ranch Chapel is a nondenominational chapel offering sanctuary for prayer, meditation, and spiritual renewal, in surroundings of beauty and serenity." (See Sea Ranch Association.org, "A Virtual Exhibit of The Sea Ranch Archives: Construction of The Sea Ranch Chapel," accessed 12/08/2018.) Its free-form design was erected by a group of collaborating carpenters. According to the Sea Ranch Association's web site: "Thamby Kumara, a specialist in hand-crafted homes, was the contractor, assisted by Bruce Johnson, a wood sculptor and builder from Timber Cove. Tim Carpenter (from The Sea Ranch) and Tim McMurtry (Point Arena) were carpenters on the project. Additional craftsmen were Will Cooper of Cazadero, Dennis Roderick of Philo, and Gordon Smith of Annapolis. George Wickstead was the landscape architect, and Don Jacobs the coordinating architect." (See Sea Ranch Association.org, "A Virtual Exhibit of The Sea Ranch Archives: Construction of The Sea Ranch Chapel," accessed 12/08/2018.)

Construction was dedicated on Monday,12/08/1986.
