Building History
This four-story building originally served as Edgar R. Braley's automobile dealership. Braley was listed in the Pasadena Business Directory of 1907 (pp. 528 and 530) as selling automobiles, but not bicycles, an earlier business for him. Two previous buildings owned by Braley stood on or near this site, the first accommodating a produce market (14 South Raymond Avenue) and later a bicycle/automobile shop (29-31 South Raymond Avenue). In 1903, in his previous building on this site, Braley sold both bicycles and autos, according to the Pasadena, California, City Directory, 1903, (p. 51).
In 1909, Braley's automobile showroom and parts enterprise occupied 29-35 South Raymond Avenue. (See Pasadena, California, City Directory, 1909, p. 67.)
The Church of Scientology, International, founded by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986), purchased the Braley Building for $10 million, carefully renovated it, and dedicated it as the Church of Scientology of Pasadena in 07/2010.
Building Notes
The Braley Building was made a contributing part of the large National Register of Historic Places' Old Pasadena Historic District in 1983.
