Building History

The Seattle Daily Times said of this new office building in 1900: "The contract for the three-story brick [sic], with stone trimmings, to be erected by Stimpson Bros. at the southeast corner of First Avenue and Pine Street, was let yesterday to Matthew Dow of this city, he being the lowest bidder. Mr. Dow's bid was $29,400. M.J. Carkeek was just $100 over Mr. Dow, his bid being $29,500. Contractor Croman's bid was an even $30,000. The building is to cover the two lots, 120 x 120. Contractor Dow's bid does not include plumbing, the contract for which ws let separately, the figure being $2600. According to the terms of the contract, the building must be finished within four months, so it goes without saying that Mr. Dow will begin work immediately." (See "New Stimpson Block," Seattle Daily Times, 02/03/1900, p. 8.)
