Overview

The State College of Washington's original Campus Architect and founder of the schools Architecture Department, Rudolph Weaver, designed what was originally known as the Mechanic Arts Building. To save money, Weaver designed the Mechanic Arts Building and Wilson Hall (1914-1917) to have the same plan and elevations. Cost cutting was crucial in the State of Washington at the time, as penny-pinching Governor Roland H. Hartley (1864-1952) decried lavish expenditures made for university buildings in Seattle at the University of Washington.

Building History

Administrators renamed this four-floor academic building for Hubert Vinton Carpenter (1875-1941), first dean of the College of Mechanic Arts and Engineering, (serving from 1917 until 1941), on 10/22/1949.

In 2018, Washington State University's School of Design + Construction occupied Carpenter Hall.
