Overview
This was the second location of this Polynesian-themed restaurant, known for its 100 fish tanks distributed thoroughout its dimly-lit interior. It operated first in West Covina, CA, from 1967 until 1980, and moved to this Rosemead location from 1980 until closing in 2013.
Building History
A blog catering to enthusiasts for Tiki decor, called Critiki.com, said of the second Bahooka's: "This was the second Bahooka location, and the one that lasted into the new millennium. The original location in West Covina operated from 1967 until 1980. Bahooka was lit quite dimly, which contributed to its labyrinthine feel. Aquariums were everywhere—over 100. The decor could perhaps be described as more nautical than truly tiki, with many items salvaged from a Navy scrap yard in Long Beach, but tikis could be found throughout Bahooka. They would make any drink a flaming drink -- even non-alcoholic ones. Near the entrance was an aquarium holding a rather large, decades-old fish, a Pacu named Rufus, who ate carrot sticks." (See Critiki.com, "Bahooka Ribs & Grog," accessed 09/18/2018.)
This location was later occupied by the Cinnabar Restaurant & Bar between 12/2016 and the summer of 2018. Before Cinnabar, the Moonlight Restaurant and Bar operated in this space, c. 2015-2016. Moonlight replaced Bahooka.
