Building History
The New Carleton Hotel, operated in 1888 by W.A. Dorris, billed itself as "superior accommodations for families," suggesting that women and children were encouraged to use the facility. Some hotels of the period catered to single men, and sometimes developed unsavory reputations for allowing drinking, fighting, gambling, spitting and other sins. Its ad in the Coronado Evening Mercury said: "One of the finest hotels in San Diego, and is a new hotel, just finished, containing 80 good, airy, sunny rooms. Located in the business part of town. The table is furnished with the best in the market. Free coach to and from hotel." (See "New Carleton Hotel ad," Coronado Evening Mercury, 07/08/1887, p. 3.)
