Building Notes
Portland's Richardsonian Romanesque Dekum and the Marquam Buildings, both new in the 1892. became two of the most popular business addresses for high-income professionals, including many physicians. An advertisement/article in Portland's Sunday Oregonian newspaper in 11/1892 stated: ""THE MARQUAM continues to increase in favor as an office building. The absolute safety from fire, artesian water, light and airy rooms, with the best appointments in every particular, including a combination safe in every room, has so impressed the public that, the building is nearly filled with the best class of people, including many physicians, surgeons, dentists, ...and specialists of known ability. The thousands of people who crowd the elevaters daily attest the business transacted in the building. (See "City News in Brief," Sunday Oregonian, 11/06/1892, p. 5.)
